A room without a door

Grete Riseng (b. 1967) holds a bachelor's and master's degree in medium and material-based art from the Oslo National Academy of the Arts.

By using her own body and silk as a mouthpiece for nature, Grete wants to focus on the different experiences that nature can provide and through it teach us to take better care of it. Grete uses the word “kime” to describe the power she has in her body, which consists of both the strong and the vulnerable. She explains that she needs the weak in order to be the strong and that she seeks a balance between these two. She can find this when she struggles with something very heavy; like a large bundle of textiles or when she throws 80 meters of silk into the wind. She describes it as if the movements gather as one force and that through the concentration that arises, she becomes alert to sounds, smells and looks at plants, flowers and trees with a more thorough calm. This need has led her to always carry a piece of silk in her bag ready for a spontaneous performance. This is how the project “A Room Without a Door” was born.
