Bird’s Nest
Henrik Nordahl (b. 1992) holds a bachelor's degree in graphic design and illustration from the Oslo National Academy of the Arts and a master's degree in fine arts from Parsons in New York. He has had solo exhibitions in both Oslo and New York, and has participated in group exhibitions both at home and abroad. Nordahl is a board member of the Lørenskog Kunstforening and is also a co-founder and board member of Fosskok Samvirkelag, a newly started cultural initiative in Lørenskog.
Henrik works with a variety of techniques and materials. Specifically, this applies to materials from the construction industry, and he looks at the relationship to their origin from nature. These are materials that we surround ourselves with in our daily lives, but rarely have a deeper understanding of beyond their practical use. However, when put in context, they can be meaningful and take on a poetic quality. Nordahl's working process is intuitive, and he looks for inherent properties in the material that can drive the process forward. It is important to him that the work conveys the material's sensibility and ability to react.
Bird's Nest is a 3.5 meter high fountain made from an old oil drum, rebar coated in a bioreceptive cement mixture and copper pipes. The cement mixture, which consists of peat, bone meal, eggshells, straw and perlite, is intended to stimulate microorganisms and moss to colonize the structure and eventually take over completely. Bird's Nest is an anti-war monument, and is about resilience and providing a home for those in need. It takes its visual expression from the images we see of bombed cityscapes, and the oil drum points out how the oil industry helps feed the war machine.
